Julius Smit Landlinks

As characters moving in a landscape, what kinds of memories and associations are stirred up in the places we walk in and through? What effect, if any, do these memories or traces have on us? Are we aware of them at the time or do we pass through the places perhaps only realising their significance later on? The Ground Works/Landlinks 1 project allowed me to explore a particular locality, using mapping, images and poetry in an attempt to answer some of these questions as real or imaginary states.
I am a poet and lens-based artist, employing visual communication and text-work in my ongoing creative practice, where I interrogate the conception of places together with their connections and histories, absent or present, whether as physical or imaginary constructs. I live in Eastbourne, East Sussex, UK, within ten minutes walking distance from the eastern edge of the South Downs National Park.
